Biomass and Biofuels are a renewable energy source that is derived from plant-based organic materials. Biofuels supply energy such as oil and gasoline that are derived from organic renewable matter as an alternative to fossil fuels. Biofuels are an alternative to traditional fossil fuels due to their flexibility to supplement our current energy needs. Most Biomass material comes from plants or wood that has either been harvested specifically for this purpose or waste products from producing wood pulp. The second most common Biomass material is from solid waste, where certain landfills have the ability to capture methane gasses escaping from the decaying waste. Methane is just as energy-rich as natural gas. This gas is captured and sold to gas companies who in turn sell it for consumption. It can then be used to generate electricity. Corn, hemp, switchgrass and sugar cane is used to create Ethanol by fermenting, while materials such as animal fat and vegetable oils can be converted into Biodiesel. Ethanol is typically mixed with fossil fuel to make it burn more efficiently however it can be used as a total replacement for gasoline. Roughly half of Biodiesel producers are able to make Biodiesel from used oils, fats, or used restaurant grease but most Biodiesel today is made from soybean oil. Another benefit is that Biodiesel fuels can be used in regular diesel vehicles with little or no change to the engine. Storage and transport can still use standard diesel tanks and equipment.
